This sounds like one of the GNUstep components (e.g. gdnc, gpbs) is  
not starting correctly.  Do you see any output confirming this on  
your console?  I believe that GNUstep applications will try to start  
these services if they are not already running and wait.  If they  
crash on startup, then they will try again a few times until it works.

That sounds like there is no window manager running.  Did Azalea  
start?  If it crashed, did it give any output before doing so?

All of the Étoilé components currently log a huge amount of debugging  
info to standard error.  It would be really helpful if you could  
include this.
