Ah ok. I thought by 'build process' you were referring to the Étoilé  
build process.

I don't really know. With Ubuntu 9.04, I just installed libssl-dev  
with apt-get and everything got correctly installed.
On my install, pkg-config --libs openssl returns '-lssl -lcrypto' and  
pkg-config --cflags returns an empty result.
