Hi list,
maybe the useability/integration discussion is just leaning a bit towards the other side (providing gnustep apps with a menu bar in the window), but a few days ago, I have come across some configuration option in my new openSuSE KDE. Now KDE offers to present its applications with a "mac-alike" menu on top of the screen instead of in their own window. When no application has got focus, it's the desktop window that shows. Out of curiosity I have enabled this and lo and behold: Even when I launch a KDE app in Azalea, its menu is painted on the top of the screen, i.e. over Azalea's menu bar :(

Now I am wondering if this is something that could be of any use to GNUstep/Etoile. I mean, would it be feasible to catch KDE's menu rendering and integrate it into Azalea's/Gnustep's menu? Or the other way round, would it be feasible to pipe the menu of a gnustep app into KDEs top-of-the-screen menu when one was running it inside a KDE session? I am (still) not a programmer, so I am stabbing in the fog, but I thought it would be at least worthwile to point your attention to this apparently new (to me anyway) feature/development in KDE.

I have two screenshots also:
one where you can see the menu at the top:
http://www.commontology.de/pub/kde-with-top-menu.png

...and one where you can see the corresponding configuration setting in kcontrol | desktop behaviour:

(sorry all the text and labels are in german, but I suppose you still know to find your way there.)

Maybe someone finds it of any use.
Cheers,
Andreas
