If you have a X window running,
you should be able to to run 'openapp GWorkspace' or other GNUstep
application.
There is no difference than other X window application.
  Azalea is a window manager.
If you already have a window manager running and it supports EWMH
(like metacity),
you can run 'openapp Azalea --replace' to replace that window
manager with Azalea.

If you don't have X window running,
you may be able to start with startx.
I think you can change .xinitrc to include a xterm.
  Once you have xterm running,
  you can run these applications:

  gdomap &
  gdnc &
  openapp Azalea &
  ...

Or you can run etoile_system, which will do above for you.

Be sure you have gdomap and gdnc running first.
I suspect the problem you have is because of that.

  If you have GDM running,
then you should be able to find the etoile.desktop in Services/Private/System/
  That's a xsession for GDM.

It may be easier to fix problem if you ask people in SILC.
