Quentin may know better than me, but you can look at IconKit. There is a IKThumbnailProvider which is supposed to generate preview image. You can play it with OuterSpace to see. Currently, OuterSpace generate preview of image internally, but you can move that part to IconKit and start from there. By the way, IconKit is under LGPL, maybe we could change it ? The reason I am a little picky about license is that currently we often move code between frameworks and applications. If the frameworks is under LGPL and some codes are moved to applications, that application must be GPL. To make it easier to move code around, I think BSD or MIT is better. Once both framework and application become more stable and we won't need to move codes anymore, then I am fine with any license.
