Here are two interesting windows management prototypes from Microsoft
Research, give them a try if you have a windows machine handy :)

GroupBar is a sidebar which is like the normal windows taskbar, but
lets you group the taskbar buttons in to groups, which you can then
hide/show, and also apply layouts to (e.g., tile the windows in a
group).

This one is kind of like the Newton's drag-to-screen-edge copy&paste
feature - dragging windows outside of a central area of the deskop
shrinks them, and you can also form groups with the shrunk windows
(which can be restored/minimized together).
