In a move sure to raise both applause and alarms throughout the online
music trading community, etree.org has decided to abandon the lossless
Shorten (.SHN) compressed audio format in favor of the more popular
MP3 file.

As reasons for the switch, the etree.org "Server Team" cited bandwidth
considerations, the loss of a number of key "servers", and the relative
obscurity of the Shorten format.

"Who are we to stand in the way of progress?" replied server team
member Jeff Kempka when asked about the switch. "Shorten is
confusing, the files are huge, and nobody can figure out how to login
to our servers. MP3 is the wave of the future," Kempka said. Mike
"The Big Nap" Wren, etree.org co-founder, added "in the end, no one
can hear the difference between Shorten files made directly from a DAT
and an MP3 someone made from their 6th-generation cassette recording,
so we should stop kidding ourselves."

According to a source familiar with the situation, the long-term plan
is for etree.org to also abandon the current system of FTP servers and
mailing lists in favor of the highly successful Napster distribution
network and IRC-based "dcc bots".
