Talked to RR'er chat support, and they don't like people with routers.
Regardless, this time I got an answer, and the rec was to disconnect my
pc from the router, connect it to the cable modem. Then run a command
prompt, and then "ipconfig /all". Tech support said that this should
tell me the primary and secondary dns server ip addresses for my
account. Not going to do that until I get a lull in the FTP action,
though!

Thanks for your insight Alan,

Tom

I don't know XP, but you need to change the DNS from your router in
CP/Network
Connections/LAN/Properties Tab to the DNS given to you by your ISP.
That's a
showstopper. Your router needs to be taken out. It's your gateway, not
DNS
server.

It certainly has Alan. Any/all context into the background of the
hardware setup I've got (and that others may have) is well worth it.
Plus, it helps me to learn the jargon of 'server-speak' also.

Thanks for your help!

Tom

P.S. - when winipcfg doesn't work in XP (I don't know why), how might I
find the ip addresses of my Primary and Secondary DNS servers? In
CP/Network Connections/LAN/Properties Tab, there's an advanced button
that tells me 1 DNS server ip -but it's the ip address of my router.
W/in my router itself, there is a page on the router software that needs
to know these ip addresses - and I've left them blank so far. . .

This is an important thing, I'd like to explain it to the list.

Your router is your *gateway*. It is the point of entry/exit to the
internet.
It puts you and all your PC's at home(1 or more) on a *private* network,

192.168.X.X, and your server has a private IP 192.168.X.X which is known
only
on your private network. The real world(us) sees the IP of your
gateway, which
it gets from the DSL or cable modem. You want people to connect to the
IP of
your cable/DSL modem, not the private IP 192.168.X.X. [This is why PASV
is so
difficult to implement on a server behind a router.] You need to
"publish"
your public IP, not the private IP.

The DNS(domain name service) servers are provided by your ISP to allow
you to
resolve names to their IP addresses. This allows you to enter a name
like
eyes.dyndns.org instead of typing my IP address.

I don't run XP so I can't comment on the built in firewall, but that is
something you need to consider as well.

Hope this helps.

Alright, there was a setting in XP -CP/Network Connections/Local Area
Connections/Properties tab that had "Protect my computer and network by
limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet"
checked.

Found it just snooping around. I don't think that this will by-pass all
of the router and client software config I've had to do recently, but
let's just see.

Also, does anyone know how to find one's "Primary and Secondary DNS
Servers?" Somewhere far down w/in my CP w/in the Network menu I found a
DNS server setting that showed 192.168.0.1 -which is my Netgear router.
Suppose that's right, since my home network goes cable modem > router >
admin pc/ftp server pc.

Here's the l/p:

norsetunes.serveftp.org
Slurp One/download
21

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and will be unavailable for comment
until tomorrow.

Please email help/blasts to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WOB: when I get this thing running, I'll be throwing out some anonymous
l/p's

P.S. - got some good responses today, good to see the list(s) w/ some
healthy help and info on them!
