1) Passive mode is a toggle in your FTP program which determines whether you
send commands asking the server to do things like listing its directory
(active mode) or whether you wait for the server to send you stuff on its
own (passive mode). Most servers require that your client be set for active
mode, but obviously not all of them. Somewhere in the settings for Fetch
should be a toggle for this.

2) In my experience, you will be happier with programs other than Fetch for
this kind of task. Much better options for the Macintosh are Transmit
(http://www.panic.com) and HeftyFTP
(http://www.blackdiamond.co.za/bdhefty.html). Transmit is the simplest
possible program but does not offer as much flexibility as Hefty. Hefty has
terrific queue and retry features, but comes with a learning curve worthy of
Olympic ski jumping. I use both for different things.

3) It's customary to offer a "WOB tax" when you use the list to gain
something, like knowledge. It shows that you are interested in giving to the
etree community as well as using it for your own advancement.
