This thread speaks to a valid concern here on the redundant supply of CDs many of us (without servers) are building. Until I can go out and buy a bigger hard drive, I have to create a shn archive for many of the shows I've collected. Many times we use 2 discs for shn archiving and 2 discs for wav. I'm not whining but I realize waste when I see it. So, I have a couple thoughts for discussion: 1- has anyone looked into virtual storage and its costs. Since the average etreer has anyhwere from 50 to 300 gigs of shn data, I wonder if there is any way data storage could be affordable. There are many concerns with trusting a 3rd party with your data but cost is the first obstacle. 2- (I know this borders on utter blasphemy but here goes...) I've come accross a number of shows for lesser known bands (eg. I'm not referring to most dead, phish, or dmb seeds here) where the sound quality is just average either due to inferior recording equipment, sub-optimal position in the audience or it was pulled off an FM broadcast(!)). I'm wondering whether it makes sense to maintain and spread these types of shows in shn format. Some recordings might be better off in m*3 because their quality doesn't merit the space a shn recording requires. Is it possible to propose a minimum set of sound recording standards for a show to merit shn trading? I don't have a specific recommendation on this since I don't know enough about recording but I'm curious whether others have experienced the same mix of quality out there.
