I'm fairly new to etree so my apologies in advance for raising questions
that must've come up before, but:

Are there supposedly any manifestations of poor quality discs other than a
higher coastering rate? Is it alleged that in the burning process, cheapo
discs are prone to data errors that might not cause coastering but (if an
audio burn) result in degraded sound quality -- diginoise, clicks/pops,
etc? (If the discs are being used for SHN archiving I'd think that once the
copied SHNs pass MD5, there shouldn't be any quality issues, right?)

Also, assuming that successfully burned discs are stored/handled properly,
is there any suggestion that "inferior" discs somehow degrade over time?
Considering that CD-R hasn't been around all *that* long, have any
controlled studies been done that in some way mimic the aging process?

I'd also be interested in links to any controlled studies that isolate the
cause of coastering or other problems to inferior discs, rather than other
potential causes such as incompatibility between burner and disc,
CPU/RAM/other hardware issues, OS or other software issues, etc.

I have an Imation burner so the first blanks I bought were Imation. Only
time I've coastered any was during one burning blitz *after* I had
coastered a couple Mitsuis, which etreers seem pretty unanimous in
regarding highly. Basically I found I had become unable to copy SHNs for
archives or burn audio CDs no matter which brand I used. A reboot cleared
up the problem so I presume it was some sort of OS/software issue.

I'd really like to see hard evidence supporting the views that many seem to
hold very strongly about the relatively quality of various brands of
blanks. Thanks in advance.

p.s. I don't believe valid discussion on the etree list is ever a "WOB" but
I'll offer this freebie (i'll pay the postage) anyway: SHNs of GD 7/2/88
(with GD 5/??/68 filler) and Radiohead 8/14/01, burned to three, yup,
Imations ... all of which will go to one person who sends an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (do NOT reply to the address above) and tells
me a decent reason to give this to him/her. Offer open until sometime
tomorrow and only to US mailing addresses. I will not send a closed message
to this list but will advise status of the offer via autoresponder to
anyone who gives it a shot.
