. . . if you purchased them in North America. That's the word from a
Mitsui rep I corresponded with recently. I'm no shill for Mitsui, but I
use them all the time, as do many others in this community. Here is
what I was told. Keep in mind, of course, that HE is presumably not
objective about his company's products. Nonetheless, there is some
useful information here -- take it for what it is worth. Also -- he
sent me a PowerPoint presentation about Mitsui products that I found
informative. If you want it, drop me a note.

---Begin note from Mitsui---

The country of origin does not have any direct influence on the disc
quality. Historically, the Japanese have consistently made higher
quality discs than the Taiwanese or Chinese. A Japanese company (Taiyo
Yuden), was the biggest contributor in the invention of CD-R. Mitsui
also holds patents and was the second manufacturer to make CD-Rs. The
Taiwanese learned much of what they know about CD-Rs from Japanese
companies, but have not been able to keep the quality as high---in fact
they ship everything they make & define the rejects as "lower grade"
media.

Mitsui only offers a single, high grade of media and we still reject
~10% of everything we make. We're not happy about the high reject rate,
but we have found that it's the only way to maintain the level of
quality that people expect from our media. We set the max defect size
at 160 microns, while most of our competitors reject at 400 microns! We
also have a patent on the Phthalocyanine dye that performs much better
than anything else available. (see www.mitsuicdrstore.com for white
papers). The duplication reject rate that our customers experience with
our media is ~ 1/10 of 1% (feedback from large corporate customers).
All of the CD-R media that we distribute in North America is
manufactured in our Colorado plant.
