Greetings friends - rant follows:
My university just had four people murdered by a 23 year old girl who set fire to her exboyfriend's apartment complex as a Valentine's Day joke - she burned his patio furnitue, the building caught fire.. etc etc... Arson - and four counts of murder. She had the IMPLIED intent for murder, because she couldn't have expected the deaths to not occur, even though we all know she would never have done it if she knew that would have been the result. Tragedy? yes. How it applies to us: We use 3M post its because it's polite ettiquitte. Is there advertising? yes. Should we do it? Probably not. Should we use corporate letterhead? No. Same thinking. Whatever the intent, we cannot assume that the damage will not occur, and is it really worth it for us to take such a GIFT as this music trading thing we have going and toy with it? It's why I get pissed about the non trader friendly band thing so much. I catch hell for it, but it does jeapordize the momentum we have got going. This week, the RIAA started testifying before Congress about how there should be a law preventing us from what we do, even though they never mentioned us by name. We should do what we can, EVERYTHING we can, to preserve the gifts we have. Slippery slope - INDEED. It's only a Slippery Slope though, really, if it's used as a scare tactic. I honestly believe it's more than just that - it's a bonafide threat. Lesson? If you have to have your mail room schlub do your postage for you and can't get around the company's logo on the package, how about coughing up the $2 for a STAMP, and mailing it like the rest of us? You're getting FREE MUSIC - how much of an UNBELIEVABLE MISER are you?!?!? What do I think about the email tags? I don't use them on this list, or for trading my music. I understand it's hard to get away from them, but 99% of the people who access the Internet have an ISP provided mailbox (or SEVERAL), and if that's what you have to use to not advertise other people's companies, then I say that's what you should use. What do I say about those of us who "piggyback" on corporation's T1s? It's fine - we may be exploiting a resource, but not advertising it when we do it. Makes sense, right? I just have to believe that people who argue against this line of thinking are the same ones that screw up my server when they upload half a show and download three. The same ones who Nadav you on your b&p. Why NOT be anal about it? If you care about it - and you are SUPPOSED to care about it if you're on etree, then you should strive to protect it. Why set fire to a lawn chair and not EXPECT the consequences? I know it's a shitty analogy - but legally, I think we're the ones who need to prove our case. We can be reasonable about it, but we can't assume we are anonymous to the ones who'd close us down (RIAA, Phish/GD, etc etc). Be proactive, it's cheaper in the long run. My cents. Peace, love, respect - for everybody. 8-Damien db.etree.org/MaskedMarvel One login for a digester who writes more than "Did I get it?"
