My guess at the lack of an "e" is to conform to 8.3 
naming convention of dos - not a play on the shorten 
theme.  BTW - I've always called them shins since day 
one.  Takes to much time to refer to them in any other 
fashion.  That's strange for me - I am usually  
particularly verbose! Go figure.
