If you have a router or a firewall, you must forward the appropriate ports 
(usually ports 21 and 22) to your machine.  You might want to have your 
friends use a real ftp client (I like FileZilla - www.sourceforce.net and 
do a search for FileZilla), and try toggle-ing the passive mode check 
box.  That sometimes does the trick.  If you are using Win2k, like I do, 
I've found it easier to just use Win2k's built in ftp server.  you can find 
the instructions for the Win2k thing on Microsoft's website.
