I just picked up a nomad from Fry's Electronics in Palo Alto for $129.
Anybody have any good Nomad hacking links? Please respond offlist. FWIW, it definitely plays 44.1khz 16 bit sample size wav files real nice in my car. Here are the downsides that I've experienced in my 1 day of use so far: The USB interface blows chunks, I'd like to rip the hard drive out and access it some other way. But www.nomadworld.com claims that it's got a proprietary drive format which blows even bigger chunks, but I'm a hacker and there really can't be that many ways that they can make a filesystem. Related, does anybody know about sleds/bays that will allow you to use a laptop 2.5 inch drive in a desktop computer, like the removable hard drives in raid systems, etc? I'll be trying mine out for recording likely this weekend, so I'll report as to it's quality -- it definitely plays 44.1khz wav files real nice in my car, though it takes like 20 minutes to transfer a cd worth of info. to it. Also, it appears that their file transport is not particularly good about dealing with errors. I tried sending a 750 meg file to it this weekend and the software choked at about 600 meg. Worse still, the free space count went down by 600 meg, and there is no apparent way to "reformat" the drive or otherwise recover the space using the software revision I've got or by reseting the device. I am using a nomad from Oct 2oo1 and I see that site has a 2.52 revision of the software (as opposed to the 2.o version I'm using) - hopefully this is better? I also see the site has a firmware upgrade b/c "line in had heavy audible distortion"... So I'll be upgrading anyways for that alone... I am interested to hear anybody's experiences with this device - especially regarding the hacking and recovery of filesystem space from the thing. cheers, Phil _______________________________________________ etree.org etree mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://mail.etree.org/mailman/listinfo/etree Need help?
