mic information is important because it can give you some idea, when looking
at what sources are available, as to what source might sound best. over
time, you may notice that a lot of the shows that sound good to you come
from the same mics, or similar. this can further help you figure out what
seed is best to get.

what is most important, though, is what sounds good TO YOU. if a show was
recorded with a sony stereo mic and you think it sounds great, then that's
fine. don't get caught up in all the "it has to be schoeps" bs. but hey,
if you really dig schoeps, then that's fine (i'm not trying to knock
schoeps). just go with what sounds good to you. also, you have to remember
that who does the taping is more important than what gear they used. if
somebody has a great rig and no clue how to use it, the tape will likely not
sound as good as if an experienced and knowledgable taper ran the same rig.

so, again, i think the main reason to keep track of these things is to give
you some idea of what seed might sound best when trying to choose among many
sources for the same show. but, that said, try not to get too set in your
ways...there are a lot of sources that can still surprise you. go ahead and
experiment sometimes. blank cds are so cheap that you can afford to take a
chance on a source you haven't heard yet.

i think the best advice is to "trust your ears."
