I use SmartFTP. BUT, sometimes I come across a server (such as one I am uploading to right now) that I can connect to, but I never see any directory structure. Active/passive doesn't make a difference. When that happens, I use WS_FTP, and 9 times out of 10, it'll work (I like the Smart gui better)

I'm sending this to the whole list, since I think it's a common thing for new members to ask. If you can take some sarcasm, and some GREAT tunes, then this is definitely the place for you! The common FTP Client here is smartFTP ( www.smartftp.com ), but I use FlashFXP ( www.flashfxp.com ). I find it doesn't act as buggy as SmartFTP, and that the interface is detailed enough for what I like to do. It does require a small registration fee, though if you don't mind waiting for a few seconds after the initial 30 day trial, you don't REALLY ever have to pay anything at all. Either one will work well fo ryou, but my recommendation remains at FlashFXP (no 99% hang ups, for those of you who have them). > I have a cable modem (e.g. RR Road Runner)....anyone > know what my max upload or download speeds would > be (bandwidth issues)? Is that enough to run my own > FTP site? > Go to www.dslreports.com and get an account with them. It's free, and you can use their line testing services to evaluate your TRUE upload and download capabilities over certain periods of time. Cable kinda sucks, in that your bandwidth is dependant on the others on your "trunk," but it's certainly better than any dial up connection will be. As far as what you need to run a server, my advice is you should, but use it for private trades. I run one on DSL, and have tried to give out a login publicly, and with my upload cap (of 256 K, high as far as upload caps go for DSLs), I just can't handle the demand. > Is there any other information that you could provide > me with that would assist in my assimiliation here? READ THE FAQs. READ THE FAQs. Oh yeah. READ THE FAQs. Regardless of what some people say, the information is all there for you to absorb. Just poke around, go there first if you have questions, and ask away if you need help beyond that. We're all pretty nice here. Well - everyone except Ghost. Oh yeah - and go to db.etree.org and start a list you can link for people to see what you have. The instructions there are self explanitory! Peace, love respect - for everybody 8-Damien db.etree.org/MaskedMarvel PS - Just kidding, Ghost. :P _______________________________________________ etree.org etree mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://mail.etree.org/mailman/listinfo/etree Need help?
