Well I never said anything about etree switching.  Just that it's
interesting!  :)  3 percent does not seem like much, but a 3-percent savings
means a 4-hour download finishes more than 7 minutes earlier.  A 6-hour
download finishes almost 11 minutes earlier.  For busy servers, that time
would add up.  It also could sometimes mean the difference between fitting a
show on 3 CDs or 2.  Sometimes that does come down to under 20 megs.

FLAC, under the GNU license, also has arguably more potential for future
improvement since anyone can work on it!
