Irritating hard drive spindown

Last night at the eulug meeting we discovered a solution to the 
irritating 2-second hard drive spindown problem on Stan's computer.
The following command caused the drive to spindown only after five
hours have elapsed:

#hdparm -S 250 /dev/hdb
