Horst,

I do not know the source of the problem. But I have some third part utilities:
System Commander Deluxe(soon getting new System Commander 2000) and an older
version of Partition Magic. Both third party utilities complained about
corrupted partition table info.

Originally, Stan installed Win 98 on the virgin 20GB HD. Then, I installed
Mandrake 7 and used its built-in utility to shrink the Win 98 partition. The
Mandrake utility(maybe Disk Druid) was used to create Linux partitions, and the
Linux install appeared to be successful(and very fast).

But, later I noticed the partition table error messages and a continuing
degradation of system performance. So, I eventually brought the CPU box in for
Stan to inspect. He did not have any better luck with it than me. So, I wiped
out everything and installed from scratch.

I first installed PC-DOS 7(the Portugese/Brazil version). Then, I installed
System Commander Deluxe.

After that, I installed additional OSes thru System Commander. And succeeded w.
Win 98 and Win NT4. During these installs, I used System Commander's OS Wizard
which includes some disk partition functionality. I got alot of "disk error,
interrupt 80h", which I ignored(no harm as far as I could determine).

Anyway, I looked on the Web site for System Commander(www.v-com.com) and found
info about their companion product Partition Commander, a competitor of
Partition Magic. I decided to order PC and phoned their 800 number.

The Saleswoman told me that I should orer the new SC 2000 instead of Partiton
Commander. SC 2000 includes all the Partition Commander functionality AND has
functionality to resize, copy/move Linux partitions(includes TurboLinux too).
So, I ordered the upgrade to SC 2000 for $34.95.

I will wait until I get SC 2000(shipping this week) before I install Linux on
top of what I already have(DOS, Win 98, Win NT4).

I will use SC 2000 as much as possible for partition create, move, copy, et. al.
If something goes wrong, they should provide support. I do not know if Mandrake
or something else corrupted the partition table, or maybe some utility does not
fully support the large 20GB HD.

BTW, I phoned V-Com and got a woman in marketing to send us 2 evaluation copies
of SC 2000 for our Demo Days event. She said they would ship tomorrow, maybe
ready for our Thursday lab session.
