Wee, another dist flame fest is coming :)
Seriously, I've heard good and bad about every dist that's out there.
Personally I've had no problems with RH5.1, 6.0, and 6.1.
I've heard great things about Mandrake, and it seems that there is a
bunch of people here that also like it.
Why not just do the tar/backup option like you said, and if you don't
like the way it works, try an upgrade on top of what you have.
Personally I love my 5.1 box (it's been tweaked and upgraded by hand in
certain spots) Runs like a champ and had better, cauz it's my firewall /
server.
