1) ping *both* the ipaddress and plain-station address (Fully-Qualified
Domain Name) of the following computers:
localhost 127.0.0.1--test to see if your networking on the loopback
works
your DNS--test to see if you can get out on any kind of network
cyber-dyne.com 12.7.122.1--test to see if you can get another known
network
2) Use 'ifconfig' to see what connections you have working. This will
tell you what interfaces you have up for networking. At a minimum, you
should have a loopback and one other that is your connection to uswest.
3) Use TCPdump to see where your packets are going or if they are
getting stopped somewhere. It's very detailed and takes a bit of
interpreting to read it right, but it's a great tool.
This should at least get you into diagnostic mode for a couple of things.
