What distribution of Linux are you using?  I don't know if it was on this
list or one of the other couple of linux lists I'm on, but someone
mentioned that Mandrake 7.0 has a "highest security" install that will not
allow anyone to log in as root.  I don't know if other distributions
have this setting.  Is it possible you set something like that up on
install?
