In fact, I found a 'newbie file' for JUST this scanner (the
Microtek X6) which (if you ignored the dated info (older kernel), but 
follow the basic
instructions and links) is a step by step install.

Pretty painless.

about the only thing missing was permissions so nonroot could use it.
(ie chmod +rwx /dev/scanner)
