What kind of sound card is it?  If you have the SuSE boxed set, it has OSS,
which is a good thing.  If you don't, go to /etc/conf.modules and comment
out the part that says it's for OSS and uncomment the alias and options for
your sound card.  It has lots of comments to help you out, such as "This
module works with blah...blah cards".   You might have to...gasp reboot to
get it to work, though in theory you can just load the modules with
modprobe once you fix conf.modules.  If it works right, the soundcore and
card modules will be loaded right from the get-go.  If it doesn't....
