Xinerama was introduced by the XFree86 team in about 3.9.1?--3.9.15 may
be it. But the 3.9.x release were 4.0-prereleases; since 4.0 is out now,
it should be used. It also fixes several bugs that were in the early
versions.
In addition, most window managers aren't that bad off as the XFree86
documentation would have you believe. Enlightenment is good to go, I
hear, don't know about KDE, and most twm-derivatives should be okay.
