Days of Wine & Corel Linux Wordperfect Office 2000 Having used WordPerfect forever on the Apple Mac Platform, (hell... I think I even ran a version on my Apple II gs !), and run the Windoze Corel Suite via Virtual PC on my Mac as well, I thought I would move up from my WordPerfect 8 on my ASL Linux laptop, (Excaliber 300), to the brand spanking new Corel Linux Wordperfect Office 2000 for Linux - Deluxe for $159.00! So I ordered it from Corel's e-store: http://www.corel.com/shop/index.htm Then I went to my PO Box and boy I was POed! On page twenty of the Linux Magazine for May 2000 Lou Grinzo reviews Corel Linux Wordperfect Office 2000 and says this: "The most interesting thing about WPO is that the Linux and Windows versions will be identical thanks to Corel's use of WINE software, which lets you run 32 bit Windows programs directly on Linux. This is the most ambitious use of WINE that we are aware of, but our experience with the beta version [of Corel Linux Wordperfect Office 2000] indicates it may be a well placed bet." ...I go ugh-oh, because maybe that means I have to sweitch to the Corel Linux included with both versions of WPO.... So I call 1-800-877-1749. The fellow there tells me you can't use Corel Products on Linux because they are for Windows. But he gives me another phone number to call Monday Morning 1-800-77 COREL. I call 1-800-77 COREL and am much reassured: #1.) The 1-800-877-1749 number is to the Corel Store and they don't know about Linux necessarily. #2.) WPO will install on every Linux distribution but Linux Power PC...and it ,may work there, they just haven't tested it. #3.) And best of all, Corel Linux Wordperfect Office 2000 is all Linux code, because Corel doesn't think WINE is mature enough quite yet. I sigh in relief. I await My box of Linux and Corel sweetness in the mail... Hal Sundt Visit Eugene Linux Users Group: http://eugene-linux.cyber-dyne.com/
