                        Enterprise Management
            Open Source Solutions to Proprietary Problems

                            Prerequisites
      Attendees are expected to understand basic data networking 
      concepts, basic network management concepts, and relate to the 
      problem of managing networks.

                             Description
      We discuss the effect of the open source revolution on network/systems
      management and compare technology in commercial platforms to 
      open source alternatives.  Emphasis is on the four value
      cornerstones of open source network management; speed, price,
      customizability and technology.

                Demonstration of OpenNMS.org software
      There will be a 30-45 minutes demonstration of the software.
      (This assumes that David Mandel is able to get the equipment.)

                              Biography
      Shane speaks regularly on network management and business topics at
      international user group and industry events. Shane's recent 
      focus is on leveraging Open Source tools in  network management 
      and building the Open Source developer community at OpenNMS.org.

      Received a M.S. degree in Applied Computer Science from Illinois State
      University in 1998.  Began his IT career in data processing with 
      the US Census Bureau in 1989.  Shane moved on to work in network 
      support with Illinois State University and in network design and 
      network management automation with State Farm Insurance.
      While at State Farm, Shane designed and deployed the network and 
      systems management solutions for the largest private network in 
      the world, including over 17,000 routers and over 20,000 NT &
      Unix servers.  Shane was an avid follower of the Bluebird
      project since its inception, and joined OpenNMS.org in March 2000.

      Shane is a certified OpenView consultant and has created and
      taught network & systems management classes for clients such as 
      Hewlett-Packard, Wal-Mart, and State Farm Insurance, as well as 
      creating and deploying the latest network management platform 
      configuration for AT&T's Global Customer Support Center.
