Novice needs help to get rolling

Can anyone tell me if I could get some help installing Linux on a machine at one of the eug-lug meetings? I'm a complete novice with UNIX type Operating Systems. However, I am looking forward to working with an OS that doesn't crash, hang or otherwise make my life a living nightmare. Please advise, Ron
