ftpd - ftp server setup

I'm trying to set up a Debian box with an anonymous ftp server. This box is inside the firewall so, I'm not too worried about miss-use. I've got it working except that after I connect, the public directory for the anonymous user doesn't show up. It's there and I can change the directory but it won't list the contents of the working directory. The ftp works fine for a normal user, but not anonymous.   Anyone want to field this one?   Thanks.
