Curt,
      It sounds like your a bit confused... no biggy... DSL is a converted analog line
to a digital line. Part of the digital line is used for the telephone (this doesnt 
take away
from your bandwidth either), then you have up and down bandwidth (you should notice 
that your upload
is only about 1/2 of your download speed). on your 256k dsl, you should get about 40k 
down, and 20k up, and
you should be able to do them all concurrently. (this means you should be able to 
upload at 20k, download at 40k, and talk on the 
phone at the same time). Your mileage may vary a bit.
