DIRECTOR, EDUCATIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

University of Oregon School of Law

POSITION:       Director, Educational & Information Technology
                (Academic  Administration)   (12-month)


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Do strategic  planning  for Law School's overall educational 
technology efforts: Provide leadership and support to develop and 
enhance Law School technology, user training, and complex problem 
solving.  Interpret and analyze requests from a range of faculty, 
students and administrators and determine the appropriate course of 
action.

2. Represent  technology  issues at the Dean level, at high levels in 
the campus community and in the broader legal and legal education 
community outside the university.  This includes direction and 
coordination of overall educational technology efforts, within and 
outside the Law School:

� Special  and ongoing Law School projects , Services to faculty and 
staff - (email, word-processing, remote access, etc; multimedia 
development  and training for faculty/staff; student orientation and 
support; student recruiting materials and publicity , etc.)

� Coordination with the Law Library.

� Coordination with university technology resources (Computing 
Center, Instructional Media Center, Telecommunications Services, 
University Educational Technology Committee).

� Coordination with  technology vendors for student laptop  requirement.

3. Plan and develop infrastructure and applications (Email, 
conferencing, remote access, etc.  Keep abreast of technology product 
developments in the legal education market and elsewhere and 
recommend areas for Law School development.  Attend vendor 
demonstrations, prepare specifications and proposals, and obtain 
quotes.  Recommend budget allocations for Educational & Information 
Technology (EIT).  Identify new resources for technology.

4. Plan, develop and conduct faculty and student training workshops 
exploring the expansion of computer resources in teaching, research 
and writing.

5. Direct network administrator and other technology staff.  Consult 
with and manage the network administrator to maintain LAN 
hardware/software computer equipment; install and maintain peripheral 
LAN equipment; install and configure and monitor various software 
applications including email; establish and maintain user  accounts 
and assist users with LAN connectivity; ensure compliance with 
policies/procedures, software license agreements.

6. Provide technical support for Law School conferences and events 
using computer facilities.

7. Take an active role in promoting the Law School and its computer 
resources to new applicants, visitors and other external contacts.

8. Identify appropriate projects and areas for development on the 
Internet, implementing  the Law School's Internet and World Wide Web 
server.  Work with larger networks involving gateways, routers, and 
managed hubs.  Maintain technical contact with all internet-related 
issues and provide Internet services to the Law School community.

9.   Generate and create reports and special projects as needed 
including  monthly statistics on computer usage and work requests.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform these responsibilities, the qualified applicant will need:

1. Demonstrated experience in providing strategic leadership to a 
diverse computing organization.

2. Strong technical skills to plan, implement and operate the 
hardware and software configuration to meet developing  needs of 
computing services.

3. Experience in long-term computer project management and project planning.

4. Experience in maintaining and installing 10BaseT  ethernet 
architecture and large storage systems.

5. Knowledge and experience in merging a multi-platform Windows 
NT-based Local Area Network.  Experience in trouble-shooting and 
resolving network, hardware, and software problems in multi-user 
environment.  Knowledge and experience in network protocols  such as 
TCP/IP and NetBEuI and how they are used to manage network traffic. 
Experience  with Unix-based servers and server applications.

6. Experience with standard Apple and PC-based tools.  Knowledge of 
document/legal-specific applications, document  management, email.

7. Experience with office automation productivity programs including 
databases, word processors, and online legal research databases.

8. Self-motivated with excellent verbal-written communication skills 
and a strong customer services orientation.

9. Proven organization skills to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects.

10. Ability to develop and teach faculty and students a variety of 
software and hardware concepts.  Strong presentation skills for large 
and small groups to communicate effectively to non-technical 
constituents.

11. Successful experience in working with diverse groups of people in 
problem-solving environment.  Good interpersonal skills, negotiation 
skills, tact, diplomacy and judgement.

12. Ability to maintain composure under pressure.

13. Creative, practical, resourceful, problem-solving skills.

14. Significant experience in management information systems or 
elated areas in medium to large organizations; experience supervising 
staff.  Law-related experience desirable.


REPORTING RELATIONS:

The Director reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and 
has significant  communications   responsibilities with key Law 
School administrators and faculty (Chair of Faculty Educational 
Technology Committee, Law Librarian, Director of Admissions, etc.).

SALARY:

Commensurate with training and experience.
