cron is indeed a *nix futility; it waits for a regularly recurring  time,
and runs a program for you.  You can set it up to run just about anything;
your default install probably already has it set up to rotate logs and
things like that.  There is also a futility "at", which just runs a single job
at a specified time, instead of repeating it every so often.
