I found Hal's points of the differences between BIND4 and BIND8 most
useful. Also, his suggestions on ways to configure split-horizon DNS were
very interesting. The other DNS stuff was a good review for me, dredging
up memories from the days when I worked with it, oh, way back when. Makes
me want to set up DNS just so I can dink around, good experience for that
future sysadmin job with a ridiculously high salary and bennies too good
to resist :-)
He also discussed the various issues of sendmail, like how versions prior
to 8.9 are promiscuous relays by default, and some resources for avoiding
editing sendmail.cf directly (thank the maker!).
I really liked his practical, how-to approach, he is definitely a good
instructor and willing to talk about specific admin issues. He would
probably even be glad to respond to email. It is good he has a PP version
of the slides, as the lack of the projector was a bit of a distraction.
I unfortunately did not stay for the whole presentation, fading out around
9. I'm sorry I missed the beer and carousing afterwards, but I'm looking
forward to next week's brew pub at the Wild Duck.
