Hi John --
Another thing you can do (I find it really helpful), is to make a
separate partition(s)(or separate drive(s)) for archiving program
sources (and your home directory also.) It's handy when you do
have to reinstall or even change distros. When doing a reinstall,
you simply tell the installation not to format those partitions.
The archive remains intact. You do still have to reinstall the
software, but you don't have to download it again. This scheme
also is great for backing up your configuration files! Once you've
reinstalled, you simply copy your archived config files to their
original locations and your back to business as usual.
Hope this is helpful.
