I think the analogy is, imagine how we'd secure our houses if we were
deaf and blind. We'd try to keep the doors closed and locked, but
occasionally we'd miss one, and then it'd be hard to tell whether
somebody had wandered in. Have to go from room to room and feel
behind the chairs and under the beds and hope that the intruder wasn't
slipping out behind you.
The reason I say deaf and blind is, we really don't have good tools
that let us sense what's going on on the network. We have to rely
on interpreting obscure log files and stuff.
Worse, many of us don't know the difference between a locked door and
an ulocked one.
