If you are using kde, and you want to setup an icon, try this:

First find out what directory the executable is in. If "./myprog" works,
then find the whole path by running "pwd" (to Print Working Directory),
which should produce output something like "/usr/bin/myprog".

Right click on your kde desktop, select "New", select "Application".
KDE will suggest the filename "Program.kdelink". Change this to
"myprog.kdelink", click the "Ok" button. Then click the "Execute" tab.
In the "Execute" box, enter "/usr/bin/myprog". Click "Ok". There
should be a new icon on your desktop.

If you're not using KDE, these directions may fail.
