Thursday's meeting January 4, 2001 At the user's group, there were about 20 people. There were 4 computers being worked on. Stan showed a couple of us a program called "Kupps". It's a KDE network printer configuration tool for Samba. It's very easy now to set up a printer on a network. He showed us how easy it was. I have to admit this is a really slick program. A half a dozen mouse clicks and the printer on a network is configured and can print. Ken tried to get into his system but forgot his password. He mentioned "Mike Smith" and then I knew the password. Mike I'm glad you pick a real easy password. We were going to go into single user mode but figured it out and was able to get in. He burnt a copy of Mandrake 7.2 and installed it. He likes it. Mandrake is getting really nice. Ken said he wanted to give a distribution to a friend that would be easy. I think this would be the way to go. Neil was mentioning installing "Slackware". But he said it's no fun when Seth is gone. Seth left early. Jim was there and was talking about computers. I showed someone how to use the man to find information. After using Linux a while I learned most of the commands line functions. Is there a place a beginner using KDE or gnome can find these commands? I know the commands like "ls" or "pwd". If you don't know or never heard them where would a beginner go to learn these commands It's great showing a newbie the greatness of Linux. Randolph came over from Stan's shop and announced Linus released the 2.4 Kernel. It's official. This day is a day to mark on your Calendar's January 4, 2001. The 2.4 Kernel was released. I thought it was coincidental that's it's the fourth of January. I thought about the Fourth of July. This day is a day of Freedom. We can say a day of freedom from proprietary OS's. A day of freedom for "Open Source". Let Linux ring. I'll see you at the meeting. Tim
