I _do_ notice an unusual message when dhclient runs:
after is says "Listening on LPF/eth0/blah(hex hw addr?)
and "Sending on LPF/eth0/blah(same hex)
it says "Sending on Socket/fallback/fallback-net
before it goes on to DHCPDISCOVER into oblivion...

is this significant (or helpful?)?
