hm,  I think my problem was mainly in the module I was loading to operate
the nic, i was using 3c509 and i just switched to 3c59x at ben's
suggestion and it all seemed to work.  

Thanks much for the feedback, I appreciate having an outlet for
communication with other linux geeks.
