Hi Ben,
If I were you this is what I would do:
-Tell rpm to remove all X rpm packages from the package system. This may complain
about some dependencies. You can either ignore them(force), or remove the
corresponding packages, or skip this step.
-Rename the current /usr/X11, /etc/X11, /usr/lib/X11.
-install some X4 rpms. If none are available then run the X4 install script again.
**You can also try starting here first:
-run XFree86 -configure as root. Then try running:
XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new
If this works, there's your new config file. Move it to /etc/X11
X4 doesn't require the font server running, so if you seem to have trouble with it,
try killing it.
You can also try running just 'X'. See if the X server loads. ctrl+alt+backspace
will kill it. If this works, but startx or xinit doesn't, then you should look
through the startx script or looking at /etc/xinit.
I'm running X4.0.2 and have had good success with it. That -configure option is very
slick! Especially with a laptop, and an lcd monitor. X4 doesn't require any
modelines from me like X3 did.
