How about a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live?  You can pay about $100
retail, or under $50 OEM for the 'Value' card.  The only difference is the
software packaged with the card.  An exception is the retail 'Platinum'
version, which has digital audio I/O, and some sort of fancy panel that
snaps into a 5.25 drive bay that has jacks and a volume control.

This card has very good audio specifications, if you are concerned about
that sort of thing.  Most of the cheezy cards feature a poor signal to
noise ratio spec, which gives a constant cassette tape-like hiss to
everything you listen to.
