Read some of the provisions of this bill.
One of the biggest things I detest about this odious piece of
legislation is it makes consumer fraud legal. I don't know about the
Oregon version, but the versions passed in other states (so far I think it
has passed in only two other states) has many many provisions that are
just plain bad for consumers (great for greedy corporations though).
The graphics and claims on the outside of a software box would no longer
have to have anything to do with the software inside the box. If I buy a
game I want to see actual screenshots of the game, not some commercial
artists rendering on a 24bit digital paintbox of what the designers wanted
the game to look like.
Another bad provision makes reviews of software ILLEGAL without the
express written permission of the publisher (and what corporation is going
to give permission to publish a negative review). The definition of review
is VERY BROAD going so far as to cover casual conversations. If I don't
like a particular game and I tell you "don't buy xyz game it's crap" I've
just broken the law and can be liable for damages of lost sales.
These are two provisions that I can think of off hand without having the
list of all the things this nasty travesty of a bill contains (and there
are many) in hand.
It is just a no win situation for consumers if this passes.
Do a search on Slashdot, this has been covered many times in the last
year or so.
