a few quick thoughts:

if the box has multiple users, it should be installed with shared
permissions, but for a single-user machine I see no reason it shouldn't be
installed in a home-directory. Any security risk?

IBM's jdk/jvm is shown to be much faster (tho I haven't seen comparisons
with that latest release)... if you're developing then it makes sense to
have multiple engines installed; for instance if you work in a cvs
repository (even just local), you could make checkouts for each jvm,
or even write makefile options to build your package under various
compilers... Makefiles were not part of my coding training but gosh
what would I do without them??!

cheers
