actually apt-get is what dselect uses to calculate dependencies, if you try to install say mozilla without installing X it will tell you that it needs to install 12 dozen packages wit it, if you remove a package for libc for instnce it wants to remove everything that needs it. that said dselect has a place in my user interface hall of shame after costing me hours of work because it doesn't make obvious what it's doing. If you want real UI horror stories though, read up about the airbus 300 and it's glass cockpit, with confusingly similar screens for setting angle of descent and rate of descent...
