I manually create a ssh tunnel to use mutt through with imap.  When I accidentally 
close the tunnel, but mutt still has an open connection through it, ssh tells me 
something like "waiting for connection to close on 143".  As soon as I close mutt, the 
tunnel closes.  Your milage may vary. ;)
