What's the name of the file you downloaded?
xxxx.tgz or xxx.tar.gz?
unpackage with: 
tar xfz xxx.tgz

maybe it's something like flash-blah.bin or xxx.run or cool-flash-program
Then it's probably executable itself in which case run this:
chmod +x filename
./filename

This should be done in the directory the file is in, at a console prompt.  Use 'ls' to 
see what files are in your current directory, and 'cd' will change directories.
