For rendering proper, the Radiance lighting modeller is available;
though it's not GPL'd, you can download it from
http://radside.lbl.gov.  Radiance is a cranky program that models
physically-accurate lighting; if you are designing physical spaces,
that's the tool to go for.

I am not aware of any good-quality interactive 3D modelling programs
on Linux.
