Try running linuxconf and adding yourself under the dialout group if you aren't
there already.   You can see if your in the group by looking in /etc/group if
your not in it then that might be it.  You can also add yourself to the group
in a shell  by running the command "adduser your_name dialout".  It's been a
while and since I had to do this.   I had the same problem before.  I hope this
helps your problem.    

Now to your realplayer probem, If you start realplayer from a shell it might
give you some messages which can give you a clue to why it's not working.
